Service Description

In this 'Frontier Fun' History class there are so many wonderful and interesting people who helped discover and establish settlements, customs and new ways of living in early America. To truly appreciate their stories, students will learn about their adventures and what life was like for them. We will not only read fun anecdotes but reenact some of those ways of living ourselves. Students will learn what it was like to be in a one-room schoolhouse setting. They will practice writing with chalk on slate boards just like Laura Ingalls, penning in cursive using a quill and hornbooks like George Washington, and writing secret Morse-Code messages using a real telegraph like Abraham Lincoln. They may also enjoy planting apple seeds like Johnny, panning for gold like James Marshall and constructing a fort like Daniel Boone. They will be introduced to land surveying, mock fishing and hunting with a “bow & arrow”, tracking, canning, cooking in a Dutch-oven, and traditional recess games. Students will learn about the origins of different pioneer holidays that we still celebrate today and the contrast of how they’ve changed over the years. Just as early settlers did, students will spend a large part of the semester learning about the different rules and chores children their own age had to follow like churning butter, fixing their own lunch, making wooden toys, collecting cow patties and fresh eggs, “chopping” firewood, milking Bessy the cow and much more. This class promotes History-Social Science State Standards which include chronological & spatial thinking, research, evidence & point of view, and historical interpretation. Although some highly requested activities may be repeated it is done in such a way that the content will introduce either a new person in history or a new approach to the activity. This class is designed to change every semester so that students can take this course for 3 years.
